Between Tides is a conversation on the ebb and flow of life’s seasons from the perspectives of painters Shannon Dickie and Monika Rosen. Water and its dynamic expressions weave through canvas and film to symbolize this push and pull. Through the lens of Shannon Dickie, she explores the shifting tides of the journey of one’s 30s within the context of moving and motherhood. Shannon uses her softly blurred finished paintings to represent fleeting moments of memories and the beauty in the transience of life’s changes. Here are Shannon’s piece that were included in the exhibition.

Shorelines are defined as “the line along which a large body of water meets the land.” The paintings in this series capture the family memories that happen at this magical place on a shoreline. Beaches are an iconic part of childhood in the summer. They provide a location for swimming and sand exploration. I am drawn to these moments to share the nostalgic feeling of a day at the beach.

Making a commission is always a special project. Clients are looking to capture a special moment or memory of loved ones or events. I am happy to talk to you more about a commission you have in mind. Below are some tips for finding an image that would make a great commission in my style. I am always happy to arrange a photo shoot in the Toronto area to capture a special moment!
Tips for finding the right image
Point of View: When applying the blur it is best to have a side view of the subject
Lighting: Lately I have been focusing on capturing photos for painting at "magic hour," that pre-sunset time of the day.
Background: The best paintings have depth, so it is nice if there is a feature in the distance.
Colour Palette: I find that colours that blur really well are a sandy yellow colour, blue, light orange, light purple. The main thing is to stay away from a lot of red or green. Those colours tend to impact the colour tone of the whole artwork.
Movement: One of the things you might have been drawn to about my work is the movement. The blur technique works best when the figure implies movement.
